Fashion Interventions and ‘Second Skin’: A Live Art Event at Southampton Arts Center Dec. 20

Live art, sustainable fashion, and a toast to ‘Second Skin’ exhibit on Dec. 20

Going through an end-of-year closet purge and ready to toss what no longer works? Don’t give up on it just yet. That old skirt or tired shirt could be transformed into a one-of-a-kind art statement.

Live Fashion Art at Southampton Arts Center

On Dec. 20, Southampton Arts Center (SAC) will host a special Toast to the Artists of “Second Skin,” the clothing-as-culture exhibition curated by Estrellita B. Brodsky. The show opened in October and runs through Dec. 28.

The event begins with a live “Fashion Interventions” performance by Mexican visual artist and art educator Gabriela Galván, taking place in front of the SAC gallery from noon to 5 p.m.

Visitors are invited to bring clothing they would otherwise discard and have Galván transform the piece in real time. First developed in SoHo in the summer of 2007, Fashion Interventions explores sustainability, human connection, and the relationship between clothing and the body.

Toasting the Artists

Following the performance, a festive “Toast to the Artists” reception will take place from 5 to 7 p.m., with conversation, cocktails, cookies, and hot chocolate. Artists and curators from Second Skin will be on hand to celebrate the exhibition and engage with guests.

“The artists presented at Southampton Arts Center remind us that fashion frames our sense of self, our perception of others, and our personal agency,” said Brodsky. “Toasts to the Artists celebrates these ideas and a shared sense of community.”
