Hamptons Pride Film Series Returns to Bay Street With ‘The Birdcage’ 30th Anniversary Celebration

Dress for ’90s Miami, sing along to “We Are Family” and celebrate Robin Williams and Nathan Lane as Hamptons Pride brings its film series back to Sag Harbor, followed by Twinless in October.

Thirty years later, The Birdcage still knows how to make an entrance.

Hamptons Pride is bringing its film series back to Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor this fall, kicking things off Sunday, Sept. 27, with a 30th anniversary screening of Mike Nichols’ beloved 1996 comedy starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane.

And this is not exactly a sit politely in your seat kind of screening.

Guests are encouraged to channel ’90s Miami and come dressed for the occasion, with a singalong to Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family” adding to the celebration.

Based on the French farce La Cage aux Folles, The Birdcage follows gay cabaret owner Armand Goldman (Williams) and his drag performer partner, Albert (Lane), as they attempt to play it straight when their son brings home his fiancée and her conservative parents.

What could possibly go wrong?

The comedy also stars Gene Hackman, Dianne Wiest, Calista Flockhart, Hank Azaria and Christine Baranski, with plenty of drag, deception, one-liners and a Miami backdrop that makes the suggested dress code particularly fitting.

The Hamptons Pride Film Series continues Sunday, Oct. 25, with Twinless, the acclaimed psychological black comedy starring Dylan O’Brien in a dual role alongside writer-director James Sweeney.

The film follows a young man grieving the death of his twin brother who joins a support group for “twinless twins,” where he forms an intense friendship with another member. Lauren Graham, Aisling Franciosi, Chris Perfetti and François Arnaud also star.

For the October screening, moviegoers can get an early start on Halloween by arriving dressed as twins for a costume contest, with winners receiving treats and a chance to appear on Hamptons Pride’s social media.

The screenings offer a fun night — or afternoon — at the movies, but they also support a local organization that has become an increasingly visible part of the East End community.

Founded in 2021, Hamptons Pride is an all-volunteer nonprofit that creates year-round events and programming for the East End’s LGBTQ+ community and organizes the annual Hamptons Pride Parade, held on the first Saturday in June in East Hampton Village.

Donations help the organization continue its programming, community gatherings and efforts to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ history in the Hamptons.
