Bay Street Theater Marks 35 Years With a Bold, Intimate Summer Season

Two world premieres and two musicals anchor the theater’s 35th year — Mister Halston, Cagney, Dear Evan Hansen, Bonkers in the Boroughs

Bay Street Theater turns 35 in 2026, and the Sag Harbor staple is celebrating the milestone the best way it knows how — with daring stories, artistic ambition, and the kind of connection that can only happen in an intimate room.

Holding court on the wharf in the heart of the village, Bay Street blurs the line between artist and audience. You’re not just watching a show in a theater— you’re sharing the space, the air, and the moment.

The 2026 summer season leans fully into that closeness, pairing world premieres with a reimagined classic, and musical storytelling designed to live and breathe on the Bay Street stage.

“For the first time, our summer lineup includes two world premieres alongside two back-to-back musicals,” Artistic Director Scott Schwartz said. “It’s an ambitious mix and feels exactly right as we celebrate our 35th year.

Mister Halston Opens the Season

The anniversary season kicks off with Mister Halston, a world-premiere solo play by Raffaele Pacitti, presented in association with Tony Award–winning producer Bruce Robert Harris. Set against the glamorous — and volatile — fashion world of 1970s and ’80s New York, the play traces the meteoric rise, iconic fame, and eventual fall of American designer Halston.

Stripped of spectacle and staged up close, the production focuses on the man behind the myth, examining the personal cost of ambition, artistry, and reinvention. Previews begin June 2, opening night is June 6, and the show runs through June 21, 2026.

A Hollywood Icon Takes the Stage in Cagney

In July, Bay Street turns to classic Hollywood swagger with Cagney, a high-energy dance musical celebrating the life and style of James Cagney. Featuring music and lyrics by Robert Creighton and Christopher McGovern and a book by Peter Colley, the production blends original songs with beloved tunes by George M. Cohan, paying tribute to Cagney’s vaudeville roots and patriotic flair.

Produced with Riki Kane Larimer, Cagney comes in with tap shoes ready to go and is pure entertainment and heart. Previews begin June 30, opening night is Friday, July 3, and the production runs through July 26, 2026.

Dear Evan Hansen, Reimagined for Bay Street

August brings Dear Evan Hansen to Sag Harbor in a reimagined production co-produced with A.C.T. of Connecticut, that fully embraces Bay Street’s intimate setting. The Tony Award–winning musical, with music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul and a book by Steven Levenson, explores the longing to be seen — and the fragile connections between teenagers and their parents.

Winner of six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Dear Evan Hansen runs from August 4 through August 29, 2026.

Laughing Things Out With Joy Behar

The season closes on a comedic note with Bonkers in the Boroughs, a world-premiere comedy written by Joy Behar. Comprised of five original short plays and performed by Behar and friends, the production delivers a sharp, fearless take on relationships and the everyday absurdities of New York life — performed live and up close.

Bonkers in the Boroughs runs September 1–6, 2026.
