Hamptons JazzFest presents Sammy Figueroa: A Tribute to Cal Tjader at Southampton Arts Center — a rhythm-driven celebration of the pioneering vibraphonist whose recordings helped bring Latin jazz to a wider audience during the 1950s and 1960s.
Sammy Figueroa is a Grammy-nominated percussionist, bandleader, and Afro-Caribbean music specialist whose career spans jazz, Latin, pop, and beyond. Over decades as one of New York’s most in-demand percussionists, he has performed and recorded with Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, David Bowie, Mariah Carey, Chaka Khan, Herbie Hancock, and many more.
This special performance pays tribute to Cal Tjader — the pioneering vibraphonist and bandleader known for combining Afro-Cuban rhythms with cool jazz and West Coast jazz traditions. Tjader collaborated with Mongo Santamaría, Willie Bobo, and Eddie Palmieri, and remains a defining influence within Latin jazz.
