INTERVIEW WITH RICK FRIEDMAN
You have produced the Hamptons Fine Art Fair for 20 years. Why did you decide to create the Hamptons Jewelry Show?
We realized that many of the people who buy fine art at our art fair — many of the art aficionados — also care about wearable art and what they wear. Jewelry is an extension of personal style and expression, so we decided to bring together a wide selection of the best jewelry from around the world.
We have leading contemporary designers as well as exceptional estate jewelry and signed estate pieces from major houses such as Bulgari and David Webb.
How many people do you expect will attend this year’s jewelry show?
We expect approximately 5,000 people over the four days, from July 23 through July 26.
What are some of the highlights of this year’s Hamptons Jewelry Show?
Opening night on Thursday, July 23, is one of the most fashionable evenings of the year. For jewelry lovers of the Hamptons, it has become a highly anticipated event.
We have live music, fine wine, and 300 showcases filled with glittering jewelry from around the world.
As a direct-to-the public jewelry show, we consider this one of the finest curated jewelry events in the United States featuring approximately $300 million worth of jewelry.
How is the jewelry selected for the show?
Hilary Joy Diaz is the curator and show director. She is an internationally recognized jewelry designer, longtime industry expert, and television personality with extensive knowledge of the jewelry world.
The show is highly curated, and many brands that applied were not accepted because we wanted to maintain the highest level of quality and uniqueness.
Clarte diamond earrings.
What is the price range for pieces at the show?
I would say $500 to $50,000 is the sweet spot. Some pieces go beyond that, reaching into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Security must be a major priority with so many valuable pieces.
Very tight security. We have armed guards and metal detectors.
What special events can guests look forward to?
On Saturday, July 25, we will host “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” with a complimentary brunch from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the VIP lounge.
Mrs. Bert Stern, whose late husband photographed Marilyn Monroe in the iconic “Last Sitting” series, will be there, followed by a panel discussion about diamonds and a guided tour of the show with Hilary Joy Diaz. on Saturday afternoon at 12:45, Diaz will lead a discussion on trends in contemporary jewelry and signed estate pieces.
On Sunday, July 26, we will present “Going for the Gold” from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., featuring a brunch, panel discussion, and a guided tour.
What can guests expect on opening night?
We have more than 1,700 people signed up to attend opening night. It attracts the fashionistas and chic jewelry lovers of the Hamptons who are looking for something special.
They often find a piece that feels exactly right for their personal style.
Hamptons Jewelry Show
What makes this show different from other jewelry events?
When our guests come to buy, they are cutting out the middleman and traditional retail markup. They are purchasing directly from the maker or the owner of the piece rather than going through a store.
That creates a very attractive value proposition because guests have access to exceptional jewelry at prices they might not otherwise see.
The Hamptons Jewelry Show is also a great impulse buy — you find something you love, get a great value, and can wear it out immediately. It is a win-win.
