Free Breast Cancer Screenings Offered in Riverhead on Oct. 24
Peconic Bay Medical Center will provide free breast exams and mammograms for eligible participants, with a focus on uninsured and underinsured women. No appointment is necessary.
Northwell Health’s Peconic Bay Medical Center will offer free breast cancer screenings in Riverhead on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The annual event will take place in the front parking lot of Northwell Health Radiology at North Fork, 1333 Roanoke Ave., in partnership with North Fork Radiology. Free clinical breast exams will be available in a mobile screening unit, and eligible participants may also receive a free mammogram the same day. Those unable to receive a mammogram during the event may be scheduled for a later appointment.
The event is open to the community, with a particular focus on women who are uninsured or underinsured and may have delayed routine screenings because of cost.
According to the American Cancer Society, approximately one in eight women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer during her lifetime. When breast cancer is detected at an early, localized stage, the five-year relative survival rate is approximately 99%.
Despite the importance of early detection, financial barriers and limited access to health care can prevent women from receiving recommended mammograms. Women without health insurance are less likely to undergo routine screening, increasing the risk that breast cancer will be diagnosed at a more advanced stage.
The Riverhead event aims to help close that gap by providing screenings at no cost.
“We encourage everyone, especially those who may have put off screening due to cost concerns, to take advantage of this opportunity,” organizers said.
No appointment or advance registration is required.
