Hamptons Diary: By Joy Behar

Dear Hamptons Diary,

I often wonder why people have estate sales. Yard sales are easier to figure out. People are getting rid of junk, but estate sales seem to be different because they are triggered by something more serious. I like to go to these sales, not just for the thrill of finding something fabulous but also to snoop around the place and try to figure out what happened.

Last year, I was at a big estate sale in Sagaponack. There was a line outside this huge mansion starting at 8 a.m. People know the good ones and there they all were, lined up for the treasure hunt. This particular sale was outstanding because everything was really cheap. I mean really cheap. The owners seemed to be hell bent on getting rid of their stuff. Why was that? I wondered. And then I got the answer. Sitting on a chair in the corner was a book: “How To Get A Divorce.”
