Life-Threatening Rip Current Risk Issued for Hamptons Beaches Through Wednesday Evening
National Weather Service warns swimmers across Long Island’s south shore, including East End beaches, of dangerous ocean conditions and strong rip currents
The National Weather Service has issued a high rip current risk for Long Island’s Atlantic Ocean-facing beaches, including the Hamptons, through Wednesday evening, warning that life-threatening currents are possible along the south shore.
The warning applies to southern Suffolk and Nassau counties, with dangerous surf conditions expected to impact popular summer destinations including beaches in East Hampton, Southampton, Westhampton, and surrounding coastal communities.
According to the National Weather Service, “life-threatening rip currents” are likely for all people entering the surf zone, including experienced swimmers. Rip currents are powerful, narrow channels of water that can quickly pull swimmers away from shore and into deeper water.
Officials are urging beachgoers to use caution, swim only near lifeguards, follow posted beach warnings, and avoid entering the ocean if conditions are unsafe.
What to Do If Caught in a Rip Current
The National Weather Service recommends:
- Stay calm and do not swim directly against the current.
- If possible, swim parallel to the shoreline until you are out of the current.
- If you cannot escape, float, tread water, and signal for help by waving or calling out.
- Always swim near a lifeguard and have a flotation device available when entering the surf.
Rip currents can affect even strong swimmers, as fighting against the current can quickly lead to exhaustion.
Rain and Storms Expected Through Wednesday
The rip current risk comes as unsettled weather moves through the region. Forecasts call for showers and possible thunderstorms through Wednesday, with breezy conditions that may contribute to rough ocean conditions.

Tuesday night: Showers and thunderstorms likely. Low around 72 degrees. Chance of precipitation: 100%.
Wednesday: Showers possible in the morning with a chance of additional thunderstorms later in the day. High near 81 degrees.
Beachgoers are encouraged to check local conditions before heading to the water and follow guidance from lifeguards and beach officials.
