Rebecca Moses Brings ‘The Art of Observation’ and Live Painting to Southampton Arts Center
The artist and fashion designer takes over the Southampton galleries for a weeklong residency featuring 11 new portraits, live painting and a conversation with Ralph Pucci and PALMER Magazine founder Stefano Tonchi.
Artist and fashion designer Rebecca Moses is taking up residence at Southampton Arts Center this week — and visitors won’t just see the finished work. They’ll get a look at the artist making it.
From Aug. 24-31, Moses will transform the Southampton galleries into part exhibition, part working studio with “The Art of Observation,” a weeklong artist residency centered on the debut of I Think You Are Beautiful When You Are Bored, a new series of 11 portraits examining women in their most unguarded moments.
The women are dressed predominantly in black, but their personalities emerge through the details: unexpected jewelry, eyewear, cigarettes, gestures and glances. They appear elegant, defiant, amused, detached, provocative, mysterious — and, yes, sometimes simply bored.
At the heart of the series is a provocative question: Are we sometimes most compelling when we stop trying to be seen?
Rather than hanging the work and stepping away, Moses will paint live at Southampton Arts Center throughout the residency, giving visitors a chance to watch her creative process unfold inside the gallery.
The residency also brings together three figures from the worlds of art, fashion and design on Friday, Aug. 28, at 5:30 p.m., when Moses will be joined by her longtime gallerist Ralph Pucci and PALMER Magazine founder Stefano Tonchi for a conversation exploring art, fashion, design, storytelling and creative reinvention.
It’s familiar territory for Moses, whose career has crossed those worlds for decades.
One of the first American designers to enter the European fashion market in the 1990s, Moses went on to modernize Italian fashion house Genny and build her own namesake label. Her illustrations have been commissioned by Italian Vogue, Vogue Japan and Marie Claire Italia, as well as MAC Cosmetics, Panerai, Kartell and Vera Wang.
Her artwork has been exhibited in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Milan and Tokyo.
Now, for one week in Southampton, the finished portraits are only part of the picture. Visitors can also catch the work — and the observations behind it — while they’re still being made.
