A downtown crowd turns out as Fredo’s whimsical world of characters—and a surprise performance—steal the night.

In One Art Space, Tribeca’s creative set showed up for the unveiling of The Moonlighters, the latest exhibition from artist Michael Fredo—with Tommy Hilfiger and Andy Hilfiger hosting a packed VIP reception.

On view through Sunday, April 12, the exhibition drops guests into Fredo’s offbeat universe—where sculptural characters, storytelling, and a playful edge take center stage.

“Michael’s work has an incredible sense of imagination and personality—it’s expressive, and uplifting, There’s a storytelling quality to The Moonlighters that feels both nostalgic and fresh, and I love how it brings people into a creative world that sparks joy and connection.” — Tommy Hilfiger

A highlight: the debut of the “Smile Collection,” sparked by curator MaryAnn Giella McCulloh’s first encounter with Fredo’s whimsical clay figures—pieces that instantly lived up to their name. Fredo describes The Moonlighters as a cast of characters pulled straight from his imagination, each with its own personality and story.

Before the sculptures, Fredo made his mark in music, landing a Warner Bros. Records deal after catching the attention of Quincy Jones, touring with Britney Spears, and scoring a Billboard Hot 100 hit with “This Time Around.”

Fredo’s music background served him well at his gallery opening when he flipped the script—jumping in with a surprise performance of his ’90s track “Free.”

The setting adds to the draw. Since opening in 2011, One Art Space—led by MaryAnn Giella McCulloh and Mei Fung—has built a reputation for pairing museum-caliber names with rising talent, all inside its light-filled Warren Street gallery. With past exhibitions featuring everyone from Al Díaz to Shepard Fairey, the space continues to blur the line between downtown edge and blue-chip credibility.
