East Hampton House & Garden Tour Opens Doors to Five Private Homes

The East Hampton Historical Society’s 38th annual tour offers a rare look inside some of the village’s most distinctive residences, plus a cocktail party at historic Fairlawn and a visit to the restored Mulford Farmhouse.

What’s behind those hedgerows and winding driveways in East Hampton? This November, visitors will have a chance to find out.

The East Hampton Historical Society’s 38th annual House & Garden Tour returns Saturday, Nov. 28, offering a look inside five private residences selected for their architecture, design and history. The homes will be announced closer to the event.

A longtime East Hampton tradition, the tour has previously opened the doors to some of the village’s most celebrated properties, including Grey Gardens, the iconic White House, the historic Woodhouse Playhouse and Windy Dune, one of the original homes of the Devon Colony.

A Cocktail Party at Historic Fairlawn

The weekend begins Friday, Nov. 27, with a kickoff cocktail party from 6 to 8 p.m. at Fairlawn, the historic Main Street residence of Mary Jane and Charlie Brock.

Originally built in 1799 for Jeremiah Miller, the house was moved farther back from Main Street and expanded in the 1880s, when it became known as Fairlawn.

The following afternoon, from 1 to 4:30 p.m., ticket holders can explore the five featured homes, representing East Hampton’s architectural heritage and evolving design sensibilities.

The tour also includes an opportunity to visit Mulford Farm and explore the newly restored Mulford Farmhouse.

Preserving East Hampton’s Architectural Legacy

First conceived by former Historical Society Vice President Allen Schneider and Executive Director Karen Hensel, the tour has grown from a small collection of historic residences into one of the organization’s signature annual fundraisers.

“Following the Thanksgiving holiday, the House & Garden Tour offers guests a one-of-a-kind opportunity to go behind the doors of some of East Hampton’s most distinctive homes,” said Dale Ellen Leff, a Historical Society trustee and chair of its Special Events Committee.

Proceeds support the society’s museums, exhibitions and educational programs, helping preserve East Hampton’s history and architectural character for future generations.
