Must-See NYC Art Exhibition: clinamen Transforms Park Avenue Armory Into a Living Symphony
The internationally acclaimed installation transforms the Park Avenue Armory’s historic Wade Thompson Drill Hall into a dreamlike escape, where nearly 800 floating porcelain bowls create an ever-changing symphony through Aug. 2.
Looking for a memorable cultural escape from the Hamptons this summer? One of New York City’s most captivating art experiences is waiting inside the Park Avenue Armory.
French multimedia artist Céleste Boursier-Mougenot has transformed the Armory’s monumental Wade Thompson Drill Hall into clinamen, an immersive installation where sound, water and movement converge in a constantly evolving work of art.
Running through Aug. 2, the large-scale installation invites visitors into a tranquil environment unlike any traditional museum exhibition.

Where Art Creates Its Own Music
At the heart of clinamen are three circular pools, each measuring 40 feet in diameter and filled with more than 10,000 gallons of water.
Nearly 800 white porcelain bowls drift gently across the surface, propelled by subtle water currents. As they softly collide, they create delicate, unpredictable chimes that become a living musical composition. No two moments sound exactly alike.
The result is both meditative and mesmerizing — a place where visitors are encouraged to slow down, listen and simply experience the unexpected beauty created by chance.
Installed on an elevated platform, guests can walk around the pools or sit on benches surrounding the installation while the soundscape continually shifts throughout the cavernous Drill Hall.

The Largest clinamen Ever Created
Originally conceived in 1997, clinamen has been presented around the world, including Paris, Melbourne, San Francisco and South Korea.
The Park Avenue Armory presentation is the installation’s largest version to date and marks its first New York appearance in more than two decades.
Each presentation is uniquely adapted to its surroundings. For the Armory, Boursier-Mougenot adjusted the basin configuration, water currents, temperature and acoustic environment to take full advantage of the historic Drill Hall’s remarkable scale.
“The Drill Hall is so immense that it allows visitors to really step into the heart of the sound,” Boursier-Mougenot said. “This work is an invitation to stay together with other people to share a moment of grace and beauty.”
An Immersive Summer Experience
Part visual art installation, part musical performance and part meditation, clinamen blurs the line between sculpture, sound and architecture.
Rather than asking visitors to simply observe, the installation encourages them to linger, allowing the subtle rhythms of floating porcelain and water to create a uniquely personal experience.
For anyone planning a summer day in Manhattan, it’s one of the city’s most unforgettable exhibitions.
