Citarella was founded in 1912 by Mike Citarella on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Joe Gurrera, a former fishmonger at the Fulton Fish Market, acquired the business in 1985 and has led its expansion.

On the East End, the company previously operated a Water Mill location before relocating to a larger space in Bridgehampton. Its East Hampton store opened in 2002, followed by Southampton in 2014.

In recent years, the company has also expanded nationally through overnight delivery, allowing customers across the continental U.S. to order fresh seafood and specialty items online.
