Police Seek Help From Public: The Case of the Vanishing Sony Camera at Hamptons Fashion Week
Southampton Village Police are asking for help identifying two women caught on camera stealing a Sony body and a Zeiss lens from a private Hamptons Fashion Week event.
Between the Hamptons step-and-repeat and camera flashes, someone quietly swipes a $10,000 camera kit. On a late August evening at the Southampton Inn, in the middle of a private Hamptons Fashion Week party (tickets started at $150), two women walk off with a Sony camera body and a Zeiss lens. Just like that. The whole thing took maybe five minutes. It’s all there on the surveillance footage, but a few weeks later, no one can say who these bold camera thieves are.
Now the Southampton Village Police want your help. Maybe you saw their faces between a vodka soda and a truffle bite. They’ve splashed images of the suspects online, hoping someone recognizes their outfits, their hair, their confidence, whatever. This isn’t a Hamptons exclusive, either. Expensive camera equipment practically wears a “Take Me” sign at parties and nightlife spots from Manhattan on out. Remember Manhattan photographer Eric Elfstrom? He lost over $12,000 in gear at Dead Rabbit because he stepped away from his table for less than five minutes. A small window, big regret.
The moral: If your camera’s worth more than a used car, keep it closer than your Aperol Spritz. Because at scene-y events like this, the crowd and chaos are the thief’s best friends.
