Hunt Slonem Celebrates NYC Return With “Through the Looking Glass” Opening in Tribeca

The celebrated artist marked his first New York City exhibition in five years with an opening reception at One Art Space, drawing a crowd from the worlds of art, culture and society.

Hunt Slonem returned to the New York City exhibition scene with “Through the Looking Glass,” his first show in the city in five years, opening at One Art Space in Tribeca.

The exhibition brings together Slonem’s instantly recognizable rabbits, butterflies, birds and vivid color in works that explore the repetition, movement and fascination with nature that have become signatures of the celebrated American neo-expressionist artist.

Curated by One Art Space co-owner MaryAnn Giella McCulloh, the show includes “Pink Ascension” (2021), a monumental 77-by-101-inch oil on canvas filled with butterflies drifting across a luminous pink field. At the other end of the scale, “Blue Hutch” (2025), a 20-by-24-inch oil on wood, features a gathering of Slonem’s familiar rabbits against a vivid blue background.

“A dream of what I see through the looking glass, where my creatures go, where we cannot see them, following their wonder — wonderland and inspiration, the source of all my creativity,” Slonem said of the exhibition. “A joyous venture.”

The opening reception drew a crowd from the worlds of art, society and culture, including Slonem, McCulloh, Mei Fung, William McCulloh, Patrick McMullan, Susan Gutfreund, Margo Langenberg, Jamie deRoy, Maribel Lieberman, Carmen D’Alessio, Keiko Aoki, Jean Shafiroff and the Rev. Enrique Salvo, rector of St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

McCulloh said the exhibition also saw strong opening-night sales, reflecting enthusiasm surrounding Slonem’s return to a New York gallery exhibition.

“Through the Looking Glass” is on view through Sept. 28 at One Art Space, 23 Warren St., Tribeca.
