Hamptons Handyman Accused of Stealing Jewelry Twice From Amagansett Home
East Hampton Town police say the 21-year-old returned to the same property weeks after the first alleged theft; at his arraignment, it emerged that he was already out on bail in a separate Southampton Village burglary case
A Hampton Bays handyman is facing felony charges after East Hampton Town police say he stole jewelry on two separate occasions from an Amagansett home where he had been working.
Bryan Ismael Morocho Albarracin, 21, was arrested Friday morning in Hampton Bays and charged with second-degree burglary, third-degree grand larceny and fourth-degree grand larceny, according to police.
Police said Morocho Albarracin was working at a residence on Katie Lane in Amagansett when he allegedly entered the home sometime between June 15 and June 19 and stole multiple pieces of jewelry.
Investigators allege he returned to the same property on July 17 and stole additional jewelry.
East Hampton Town Police detectives identified Morocho Albarracin as a suspect during their investigation and located him Friday morning on Springville Road in Hampton Bays, police said. He was arrested and transported to East Hampton Town Police headquarters.
Arrested in both East Hampton Town and Southampton Town
At his arraignment Friday afternoon, another element of the case emerged: Morocho Albarracin was already out on bail following an arrest on similar charges in Southampton Village.
According to The East Hampton Star, his Legal Aid Society attorney told the court that Morocho Albarracin had posted $100 bail Tuesday after being charged with third-degree burglary and third-degree grand larceny in Southampton Village. That alleged incident occurred after the Amagansett thefts.
East Hampton Town Justice Steven Tekulsky set bail in the Amagansett case at $35,000 cash, $70,000 bond or a $350,000 partially secured bond. Morocho Albarracin was unable to post bail and was taken to the Suffolk County Jail in Riverside.
Police have not disclosed the total value of the jewelry allegedly stolen from the Amagansett residence.
Morocho Albarracin is self-employed as a handyman, according to East Hampton Town police.
Police Ask Other Potential Victims to Come Forward
East Hampton Town Police detectives are asking anyone who believes they may also have been a victim to contact the department at 631-537-7575.
The charges are accusations, and Morocho Albarracin is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
