Gurney’s: The Montauk Season That Starts After Summer

At Gurney’s, the beach town’s legendary oceanfront resort settles into a slower rhythm of firepits, spa days, prix-fixe dinners and ocean views long after Labor Day.

By October, Montauk drops the summer act. The crowds clear out, the traffic chills, and the beaches go quiet. The air turns a little sharper. It is officially “watch it from a cozy window seat” weather, not “dive in and hope for the best” season.

For Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa, this slower, quieter Montauk isn’t the off-season; it’s the whole point. While some lock up and head out after Labor Day, Gurney’s is just getting comfortable.

This fall and winter, the resort’s wrapping up its 100th birthday with a lineup meant to convince you that Montauk once the sun-worshippers leave might be the best Montauk: crackling firepits, indoor dive-in movies, spa days, hands-on cocktail workshops, and a string of prix-fixe dinners at Gigi’s.

The party starts with Indigenous Peoples Weekend — an honest-to-goodness marathon for adults and kids: live bands, mixology and wine classes for the grown-ups, fitness for both, apple cider, hot chocolate, and “Kids Night Out” activities so the adults can actually chill.

Want to do less? Grab the Autumn Escape Spa Special. Through December 20, you can book a 60-minute massage or high-performance facial for $195, then roam the Seawater Spa & Bathhouse like you own the place, with heated pools, a cold plunge, a sauna, steam rooms, the whole thing.

And then: the igloos. From November 7 through April 4, they’re not playing up Montauk’s usual seaside vibes. Think Lake Tahoe — alpine blankets, Tahoe-inspired cocktails, a sneak peek of Gurney’s Lake Tahoe Resort & Spa (opening in 2027), only with the Atlantic as a backdrop instead of mountains. Montauk’s always existed at the crossroads: beachy, surfy, and strangely perfect for fireside coziness.

Thanksgiving gets a whole weekend of its own — welcome drinks, more mixology, live music by The Firepit, and the 50th Annual Turkey Trot. Gigi’s throws a three-course Thanksgiving dinner, so yes, you can get turkey, but also filet, salmon, or lobster tagliatelle, all for $145 per grown-up, $45 per kid.

Still, maybe the most tempting reason to stick around off-season? Just dinner. Gigi’s fall and winter prix-fixe runs Sunday to Thursday, October 12 to April 15, 2027, which is a three-course menu for $65. Picture soup or burrata with peaches and pomegranate, then filet mignon or Faroe Island salmon or roasted organic chicken, and chocolate mousse cake or salted caramel budino for dessert.

Swing by for Sunset Hour at Gigi’s Bar, Thursday through Sunday, 4 to 6 p.m. No reservations—just show up, sit down, and watch the light change over the Atlantic. They’ve got oysters, smash burgers, tuna crispy rice, cocktails, wines by the glass, and those signature martinis. It’s low-key, aimed at locals as much as guests.

Families get the indoor heated pool as a movie theater on Saturday nights—dive-in movies at 6 p.m. Snag a float, catch a favorite flick, and forget the weather outside.

And for anyone who’s ever wondered what’s actually in those cocktails, mixology classes are back November 7. Every Saturday, 3 to 4 p.m. in the Dune Lounge, Gurney’s bar crew shows you how to shake, stir, and garnish like you mean it.

Montauk is famous for summer, sure, but Gurney’s has spent a hundred years making the case for the other seasons. This year, they really nail it.
