Hamptons Pride is honoring World AIDS Day on Dec. 1 with a public viewing of quilts from the National AIDS Memorial at LTV Studios. The event is free and open to the public.
The viewing of the quilts at LTV in Wainscott begins at 3 p.m. From 5 to 6 p.m., there will be a ceremony honoring East Enders lost to AIDS and a “Calling of the Names” processional. “Every one of these blocks on these quilts is someone who passed away from the East End,” said Tom House, founder and president of Hamptons Pride. “Their family and friends are here to honor them. There are so many people we lost in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s — we need to remember these people. They are part of our history forever.

“At the World AIDS Day ceremony, we let people speak about the individuals who are on the quilt. We also have a calling of the names,” added House. “Anyone who knows someone who has passed away from AIDS can say their name and ring the Tibetan wishing bowl. It’s very, very moving, and people love it. They appreciate it. It really makes our community richer.”
On Sunday, Nov. 30, the Hamptons Pride Second Annual Names Project kicked off with a special screening at LTV of the Oscar-winning film Philadelphia (1993), featuring Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, Antonio Banderas and Mary Steenburgen, followed by a viewing of the quilts. Complimentary refreshments were donated by Golden Pear Cafe.

“This is one more instance of the power of a story — and how through stories we crack open,” Eaton said before taking the stage. “The movie is gut-wrenchingly lovely, the song is gut-wrenchingly lovely. I’m honored to play it — and I’m just honored to be here on a Sunday to bear witness to World AIDS Day.”
This year’s East End commemoration follows recent national headlines reporting that the U.S. government will not publicly recognize World AIDS Day for the first time since 1988 — making Hamptons Pride’s event especially meaningful to the community.

The news was first reported by journalist Emily Bass and confirmed in an email viewed by The New York Times. The government email reportedly said employees could “tout the work” on AIDS “to counter this dangerous disease and other infectious diseases around the world” and attend events related to World AIDS Day commemorations, but should “refrain from publicly promoting World AIDS Day through any communication channels, including social media, media engagement, speeches or other public messaging.”

“We don’t understand what’s happening nationally in that we’re not allowed to grieve our lost loved ones,” said House. “So we’re doing what the administration won’t do, which is honor World AIDS Day. We’re going to do it every year on Dec. 1.”
