Ted Conklin, Longtime Owner of Historic American Hotel, Dies at 77

Sag Harbor Loses a Local Legend

Theodore Brigham Conklin, III —”Ted”— Conklin, the longtime owner and wine director of the historic American Hotel, has died. He was 77. A cherished member of the Sag Harbor community and Bay Street Theater Board of Trustees, Conklin leaves behind a legacy of hospitality and heart.

53 Years at the Heart of Main Street
Conklin bought the iconic American Hotel more than five decades ago, in 1972. Under his care and renovation, the 19th century hotel became a must-visit destination for locals and visitors alike, blending fine dining, hospitality, and a welcoming atmosphere.

A Community Celebration of His Favorites
On Dec. 15, 2025, friends and neighbors gathered outside the hotel to sing “White Christmas,” Conklin’s favorite holiday song. Organized by Conklin’s friends Jeff Peters and Billy Baldwin, with Judy Carmichael at the piano; the event was live-streamed to Conklin at his second home in Palm Beach, where had been managing health issues for the past two years.

Remembered for Joy, Wine, and Friendship
“Ted loved music, food, good wine, and the joy of people gathered together — especially around a piano,” shared Bay Street Theater Executive Director Tracy Mitchell, along with the Board of Trustees and family. “He offered wisdom freely, led with kindness, and greeted everyone with a smile that made you feel at home. We will miss him dearly.”

Conklin is survived by his wife, Susan Franklin, daughters Samantha B. Conklin, Natasha D. Conklin, son Theodore B. Conklin, IV, stepdaughter Katy O’Donnell, five grandchildren, four sisters, and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is expected to be scheduled for later this month.

The family is asking that any memorial contributions made in Conklin’s honor be sent to the Sag Harbor Food Pantry, PO Box 3191, Sag Harbor, NY 11963. sagharborfoodpantry.org
