The summer crowds may be heading west, but the East End isn’t closing up shop. From Tumbleweed Tuesday parties and live music to restaurant specials, art and gardens, here’s where to go and what’s happening Tuesday, Sept. 8.
There comes a moment every Hamptons summer when the traffic thins, the dinner reservations get easier and locals look around and realize: We made it.
Welcome to Tumbleweed Tuesday.
The unofficial East End holiday arrives Tuesday, Sept. 8, the day after Labor Day and the traditional exhale after another packed Hamptons summer. The name goes back to the days when the seasonal crowds seemingly disappeared overnight, leaving local roads and villages so empty you could practically picture a tumbleweed rolling down Main Street.
The Hamptons and North Fork certainly don’t shut down after Labor Day anymore — and increasingly, neither does the season. But Tumbleweed Tuesday still marks a shift. The pace changes. Tables open up. And after a summer spent working, hosting, serving, cooking and keeping the East End moving, locals finally get a little more of it back.
So, what do you do with it?
From an all-day Tumbleweed Tuesday party and live music on Main Beach to a 3-mile Noyac Bay swim, lobster night, half-price tacos, North Fork gardens and a few good reasons to raise a glass, here are some ways to celebrate Sept. 8 from the Hamptons to the North Fork (that is, if you aren’t glued to the sofa or passed out on a deck chair).
TUMBLEWEED TUESDAY
Tumbleweed Tuesday: End-of-Summer Gathering at Canoe Place Inn
Tuesday, Sept. 8, 11 a.m.-9 p.m.

Canoe Place is making a full day of the East End’s unofficial holiday. Spend the afternoon poolside with $25 pool access and a $75 food-and-beverage minimum, plus 50% off select classic cocktails, wines by the glass and select bottles from 11 a.m. to close. A new $42 prix fixe dinner launches from 5 to 9 p.m., with DJ Henry Eau in the garden from 6 to 9 p.m.
Tuesdays at Main Beach: Tumbleweed Tuesday Finale

Main Beach, East Hampton
One last Tuesday at Main Beach. The East Hampton Village Foundation closes out its popular summer concert series on Tumbleweed Tuesday with Fred Goldring. Bring a blanket or beach chair and catch live music by the ocean as summer slips into fall. Parking is free after 5 p.m., and the Beach Hut concession is open until 8 p.m.
Noyac Bay Annual Swim Crossing
Tuesday, Sept. 8, 7:30-11 a.m.
Long Beach, North Haven
Now this is a Tumbleweed Tuesday tradition. The Dawgpatch Bandits finish their Tuesday morning swim season the day after Labor Day with a 3-mile open-water crossing of Noyac Bay from Long Beach to Jessups Neck. Participation is limited to 10 qualified swimmers who have completed at least two Tuesday morning mile swims with the group.
