SPARK Travel Snapshot: Berlin, Germany

We know September is the best month in the Hamptons. But this year my husband and I are celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary so we were looking to do something special.

We went to Berlin. Why? It sounded interesting: art scene, nightlife, urban, and historic.

It was a good decision. It’s not too touristy, there’s lots to do (100+ museums), the people are nice, and almost everyone speaks some English.  There’s a sadness, too, of course. The Holocaust Memorial and remnants of the Berlin Wall are reminders of a horrific period in its past.

Where we stayed: The Hotel Adlon Kempinski. Elegant and within walking distance of museums and historical sites, with the best down feather bed and oversized, thick towels. Located right next to the Brandenberg Gate, one of Berlin’s most famous landmarks. $$$ kempinski.com/en/hotel-adlon

For a splurge, go to Restaurant Bricole, a small, prix fixe restaurant with delicious, creative dishes, but not over the top. The vibe is West Village casual, elegant, in the buzzing, intimate Prenzlauer Berg neighborhood. It has a Michelin star. bricole.de

What surprised us: Berlin is a big city but easy to get around. There are beautiful (yes, beautiful) subway stations where the clean trains run frequently. One subway car featured a unique upholstered seat of people dancing.

What amused us: The little red and green pedestrian figures at street crossings (known as Ampelmann).

What we missed: The nightlife, which is supposed to be great—if you’re young!
