The Best Ways to Celebrate New Year’s Eve in New York City | Our SPARK Picks

From the iconic Times Square Ball Drop and NYC fireworks to cozy at-home celebrations, SPARK shares the best ways to ring in 2026 in New York City.

It’s almost New Year’s Eve, and we know what that means: a last-minute dash to the gym to squeeze in that end-of-year workout. Face it—another year, another unused membership. Why start now? Oh right. There’s always Jan. 1 for that treadmill comeback.

If you’re heading out on NYE in NYC and ready to brave what many lovingly call “Amateur Night” (no offense intended—just please drink responsibly), here are our SPARK go-to picks for memorable ways to ring in 2026. [And yes, you can run at midnight in Central Park, catch a Broadway show, see Phish at MSG, or choose from a thousand other events.] We’re keeping it simple. Three choices.

Watch the Ball Drop in Times Square

Wednesday, Dec. 31 | Arrive early—around 3 p.m.
Info: timessquare.nyc.org

Ready to brave the cold, more than a million strangers packed into Times Square, and the reality that bathroom breaks are not a thing? You only live once—and over a billion people worldwide will be watching—so go for it. Youth and strong bladder control help.

To see the iconic Waterford Crystal Ball drop, you’ll need to arrive early. Think 3 p.m., with 6 p.m. being the latest for decent viewing. By 10:30 p.m., you may as well be watching from your phone. Viewing is free in designated public areas, generally between 43rd and 50th streets along Broadway and Seventh Avenue. Prefer comfort? Rooftop views at nearby hotels and venues come at a premium—or cozy up at a friend’s nearby high-rise.

Watch New Year’s Eve Fireworks

Various locations across NYC

Nothing says “spectacular New Year” like bright lights and booming fireworks. To ring in 2026, catch displays in Prospect Park, Central Park (near the Bandshell or Bow Bridge), or from Brooklyn Bridge Park and along the Hudson River. If you’re feeling fancy, rent a boat or book a cruise near the Statue of Liberty.

Rooftop parties (for a price) also offer prime views and plenty of sparkle. Check NYC.gov for official details and location announcements, typically tied to the Macy’s New Year’s Eve fireworks, often launched from the East River.

Watch the Ball Drop at Home

Warm, cozy, and delivery is just a click away—one of NYC’s greatest perks. Channel-surf, laugh as Anderson and Andy attempt to outdo your roommate or spouse, then fall asleep early. Set your alarm, hit snooze, and face 2026 when you’re good and ready.

What to watch:

  • CNN’s New Year’s Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen (8 p.m.)
  • Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve on NBC, featuring Diana Ross, with performances by Mariah Carey, Post Malone, Chappell Roan, Demi Lovato, Maren Morris, 50 Cent, Charlie Puth, OneRepublic and Pitbull

Bonus Pick: Take Out and Make Out

Butterfield Market
Locations:

  • 77th Street & Lexington Avenue
  • 85th Street & Madison Avenue

Sometimes takeout is better than going out. Elevate the evening with your favorite prepared foods (see our SPARK NYC Obsesion: Butterfield Market), add a bottle of bubbly or Pellegrino, and create a feast worth celebrating. Snuggle up in your comfiest pajamas, make your New Year’s resolutions, and—with a full, happy belly—promise yourself you’ll work out at some point in 2026.

***Remember: Alone or partnered, savor every minute of the year ahead in good health and good cheer. Time flies. Make SPARKS.
