The SPARK Eye: On Assignment With Jim Lennon | Capturing a Winter Storm in Bridgehampton

Veteran photographer Jim Lennon shares his adventure capturing the perfect storm in Bridgehampton.

“Timing is everything” is my favorite quote when setting up for a photo.

During a January storm that dropped up to 20 inches of snow across a large section of the United States, I was motivated to venture out and find a photograph. Never knowing whether an outing will reveal something that interests me, I loaded up my gear and braved the elements.

While not every image I capture is for a client or assignment, I approach each photo as if it were.

I consider myself more of a historian when I’m out with my camera, and I love the challenge of getting the photo exactly the way I want it in-camera.

As the storm moved off to the Northeast, I made it to the ocean just before 3 p.m. By the time I set up my tripod, composed the shot and adjusted the camera, I could barely get my fingers to work.

I climbed back into the Jeep with the heat blasting to warm up. After defrosting, I popped out just long enough to take this exposure at 3:29 p.m. I was able to capture the combination of newly fallen snow, howling winds, breaking sunlight and blue sky behind the storm at W. Scott Cameron Beach in Bridgehampton.

The snow fence provided dramatic contrast, along with a vanishing point that added dimension and depth. The camera was a hardy, weather-resistant Nikon D3X with a 24–120mm lens set at 75mm. Exposure was set at 1/50 of a second, aperture at f/22, ISO 100, with color balance set to daylight.

Worth the trip — chill and all.
