Drone-assisted search led to arrest after attempted rooftop escape in the heart of East Hampton Village

As Memorial Day weekend shoppers begin pouring into the Hamptons for the unofficial start of summer, a dramatic theft at East Hampton’s Ralph Lauren Double RL store ended with a rooftop escape attempt and drone-assisted arrest, according to East Hampton Village police.

Authorities said Ruth Pamela Guzman Rosario, 21, of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, was arrested Friday afternoon after allegedly stealing more than $21,000 in merchandise from the luxury Main Street boutique before attempting to evade officers by climbing onto a neighboring rooftop.

Police said officers responded at approximately 9:40 a.m. Friday after employees arriving to open the store discovered a damaged door and missing merchandise inside the high-end retail destination, one of East Hampton Village’s most prominent designer storefronts.

East Hampton Village detectives launched an investigation and tracked Rosario to an apartment on Newtown Lane, just steps from the village’s busy luxury shopping district.

According to police, Rosario attempted to flee by climbing out of a second-story window and onto a neighboring rooftop as officers closed in. Police then deployed a drone to monitor the area.

Authorities said Rosario eventually returned to the apartment, where she was taken into custody without further incident.

Investigators recovered the stolen merchandise — valued at $21,250 — along with brass knuckles allegedly found inside the apartment.

Police said Rosario was visiting a friend who lives at the Newtown Lane residence.

She was charged with third-degree burglary, third-degree criminal mischief, third-degree grand larceny, third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and obstructing governmental administration.

The investigation remains ongoing.
