Jodie Foster Lights Up the Hamptons Film Festival

Academy Award winner Jodie Foster brought her signature brilliance and charm to East Hampton on Oct. 7 for the Hamptons International Film Festival — lighting up both the red carpet and the big screen in East Hampton with her new film, Private Life, directed by Rebecca Zlotowski.

The 7:15 p.m. spotlight screening at UA 1 Cinema quickly sold out, prompting organizers to add a second showing at 9 p.m. Foster, ever gracious, stayed for both and joined Deadline Hollywood’s Mike Fleming Jr. for lively Q&A sessions afterward.

In Private Life, Foster plays Lilian, a renowned American psychiatrist living in Paris. When one of her longtime patients (Virginie Efira) dies unexpectedly, Lilian suspects foul play and teams up with her ex-husband, Gabriel (French film legend Daniel Auteuil), to uncover the truth. What unfolds is part mystery, part self-discovery, as Lilian — not exactly a model therapist at first — begins to listen, change and confront what she’s long avoided about herself.

The film, a playful psychological thriller with emotional depth, marks Foster’s first leading role entirely in French. Fluent since childhood, she revealed that her mother enrolled her in a French-speaking school when she was just 9. To prepare for the role, Foster immersed herself in Paris and didn’t speak English for three weeks before filming — not even with fellow Americans.
