Knitters Against Abuse: Artisan Sale in East Hampton for The Retreat

A stitch in time saves nine—and on January 10, it may also help change a life.

The Retreat will host Knitters Against Abuse, a one-day artisan marketplace spotlighting local and regional knitters and textile artists who have donated handcrafted pieces to support survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. The shop will be open from  followed 5 to 7 p.m. and include an intimate cocktail reception.

Organized by Retreat board member Anne Kothari, the event brings together craft, care, and community in support of The Retreat’s life-saving programs. Shoppers will find one-of-a-kind knitwear and accessories created in fine fibers, along with purple knitted safety pins—a quiet but powerful symbol of safety, solidarity, and the safe spaces The Retreat helps provide for survivors and their families.

“This is about craft, care, and community,” said Kothari. “Each piece represents time, skill, and intention—offered in support of people seeking safety and healing.”

Participating knitters include Anne Kothari, Sue de Lara, Judy D’Mello, Sally Wang, Beth Josephs, Inez Crandall, Gretchen Comly, Adina Friedman, Karen Garcia, Erika Garcia, Vivienne Keegan, Rabbi Cantor Debra Stein, Eileen Gladstone, Zuleyma Nieto, Diane Grogan, Carmen Quintuna, and members of the Most Holy Trinity Knitters, among others.

The event is made possible in part through the generosity of Susan Nieland, a longtime supporter of The Retreat and member of the local knitting community.

Knitters Against Abuse is open to the public for one day only. All proceeds directly benefit The Retreat’s life-saving programs, proving that sometimes the smallest stitches can make the biggest difference.
