Winter Weather Advisory in Effect Sunday for NYC Metro & Long Island

Two rounds of snow are expected Sunday, creating hazardous travel conditions across the NYC metro area and Long Island.

A winter weather advisory has been issued for the NYC metro area and Long Island for Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., with snow, slick roads and reduced visibility expected.

Snow Timing: Two Distinct Rounds

Forecasters say the bulk of the snowfall will arrive in two separate waves:

  • Sunday morning: The first round will primarily impact areas north and west of New York City.
  • Sunday afternoon to evening: After a brief lull with lighter precipitation, snowfall rates are expected to increase again late Sunday afternoon into the evening hours.

How Much Snow Is Expected?

  • Total snowfall: 3 to 5 inches across much of the region
  • Higher totals: Nassau County and western Suffolk County could see the upper end of those totals
  • Isolated amounts: Up to 7 inches possible, mainly in eastern Connecticut

On Long Island specifically, 2 to 4 inches of snow are expected, with localized variations depending on temperature and precipitation type.

Rain–Snow Mix Could Affect Totals

Snowfall totals across Long Island and coastal areas will depend heavily on surface temperatures and how much rain mixes in during the afternoon. Forecasters note that if temperatures run colder than expected, snow totals could be slightly higher.

Temperatures

  • Sunday highs: Mid- to upper 30s
  • Sunday night lows: 20s
  • Monday: Highs in the mid-30s, dropping into the teens Monday night
