Breaking News: Don Lemon Taken into Federal Custody in Los Angeles

Don Lemon Taken Into Custody by Federal Agents in Los Angeles

Journalist and former CNN anchor Don Lemon was taken into federal custody by federal agents in Los Angeles late Wednesday night, Jan. 29, according to CBS News.

The detention follows a grand jury indictment related to a Jan. 18, 2026, anti-ICE protest at a church in St. Paul, Minnesota, that Lemon was covering for his media platform, The Don Lemon Show, according to court filings cited by CBS News. Prosecutors have accused Lemon of unlawful interference with churchgoers. Lemon has said he was present in his capacity as a journalist.

A federal magistrate judge had previously declined to sign arrest warrants for Lemon, after which a grand jury was empaneled, according to reports.

The Department of Justice alleges that Lemon and others present interfered with worshippers’ rights. The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security were involved in Lemon’s detention in Los Angeles, according to multiple reports.

On Thursday morning, Jan. 30, a statement from Lemon’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, was posted to Lemon’s social media accounts. In the statement, Lowell characterized the case as an attack on press freedoms and criticized the Justice Department’s priorities. The statement reads, in part:

STATEMENT FROM ABBE LOWELL,
ATTORNEY FOR DON LEMON

“Don Lemon was taken into custody by federal agents last night in Los Angeles, where he was covering the Grammy Awards. Don has been a journalist for 30 years, and his constitutionally protected work in Minneapolis was no different from what he has always done. The First Amendment exists to protect journalists whose role is to shine light on the truth and hold those in power accountable.

“Instead of investigating federal agents involved in the deaths of two protesters in Minnesota, the Trump Justice Department is devoting its time, attention, and resources to this arrest. This represents an unprecedented attack on the First Amendment and a transparent attempt to distract attention from the many crises facing this administration. Don will fight these charges vigorously and thoroughly in court.”

Charges against Lemon have not yet been adjudicated.

This is a developing story.
