Montauk Resident, Rufus Wainwright, Crashes the Grammys

Montauk seems to turn any fancy award night into a casual beach scene, as if someone brought sand onto the red carpet and no one cared. For example, Rufus Wainwright, a singer-songwriter who has a second home in Montauk and a history of family ties to the East End of Long Island, showed up as a surprise guest at the 68th Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on Feb. 1. He didn’t make a big entrance, perform, or hype up a special collaboration. It was more like a quick appearance. Wainwright wasn’t there to sing but to do something less common: accept an award for the Dalai Lama, who is known for being calm while everyone else is excited.

In a night full of big shows, the win was surprisingly low-key. The 90-year-old Tibetan Buddhist leader won Best Audio Book, Narration, and Storytelling Recording for his 2025 book, Meditations: The Reflections of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. This audio book is more about quiet authority than being popular. It’s not just His Holiness; three-time Grammy award nominee Wainwright and other artists are part of the production, adding their voices to a group effort.

The award went to a recording that just wants to be heard, not try to go viral or seek attention. Sounds like.a win for peace.
