Walmart Riverhead: Bigger Carts, Longer Aisles

Walmart moves closer to turning its Riverhead store into a full-fledged supercenter.

Walmart is looking to give its Riverhead store a big makeover, turning the current spot into a full supercenter. Imagine: you walk in and it’s not just a store, but a full-blown supermarket too. Think groceries, a bakery, deli, meat, fresh stuff – basically, a super-sized American shopping experience.

The folks at Riverheadlocal.com chatted with Denise Civiletti, and she reports that Walmart people stopped by Town Hall to talk with the Riverhead Planning Department. It’s like a sneak peek meeting where they share their plans way before any official papers get filed.

Alek Kociski from Bohler Engineering mentioned that the store might get bigger, going from 167,000 square feet to around 180,000. The garden section would get swallowed up, and they might turn the old tire place into more shopping space. Inside, they’d shake things up to make room for all the supermarket stuff, which would change how everyone shops there.

Brian Kennedy, Walmart’s lawyer, told town people that they won’t need special permission for the changes. But, they will need to buy extra rights to build more in the shopping area. Greg Bergman from Riverhead said they bought some of these rights back in 2010 when they first built the Walmart and other buildings there.

More space and groceries mean a few extra steps. Bergman thinks Suffolk County might ask for a study on traffic, and adding a deli and bakery means the health people will want to check things out. Matt Charters mentioned they’ll need grease traps – not pretty, but key for any place serving food.

Jason Klipa, who speaks for Walmart in New York, said they’re still working on the updated plans and don’t know exactly when they’ll turn them in. But, if you want a sneak peek, he said to check out the Walmart supercenter in Yaphank that opened a few years ago.

The current Walmart in Riverhead opened in 2014 near the Tanger Outlets, after moving from its old spot on Route 58. Now, more than ten years later, it looks like they’re ready to go bigger – this time with groceries, longer aisles, and more stuff to keep you shopping.
