Join Ma’s House for a community-centered art workshop led by artist Amanda Raquel Dorval (Nuyorican–Dominican–US) that explores flowers as powerful symbols of both resistance and mourning.

Using felt and embroidery, participants will gather to reflect on the ways flowers hold meaning across cultures—as markers of loss and remembrance, as expressions of resilience, and as quiet but enduring forces for collective care and movement building. Together, we’ll consider how floral imagery can carry personal memory while also pointing toward cross-cultural solidarity and shared futures.

The evening will unfold in three parts:

Part 1 (30 min): Create individual felt flower stems to take home.

Part 2 (1 hr): Decorate felt quilting squares through guided creative and reflective prompts centered on grief, heritage, hope, and resistance.

Part 3 (1.5 hrs): Collaboratively hand-sew the squares into a large communal felt quilt, emphasizing connection, interdependence, and shared roots.

All materials will be provided, and no prior crafting experience is necessary.

The finished quilt will be completed by the artist and proposed for inclusion in Dorval’s MFA exhibition at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Santa Fe (May 2026). Following the exhibition, the quilt will be donated back to Ma’s House, returning this collective work to the community that created it.

This workshop is an invitation to slow down, make together, and reflect on how something as delicate as a flower can persist, remember, and resist. Price: Free
