Shelter Island Fall 5K Sees Two Runners Break Course Record

Joshua Green sets a new course record as Jason Green also beats the previous mark at the 27th annual race, which supports women coping with cancer on the East End.

Two runners broke the previous course record at the 27th annual Shelter Island Fall 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, Oct. 17, turning a chilly autumn morning into a standout day for the island’s annual fundraiser.

Joshua Green, 26, led the field with a blistering time of 14:43.58, setting a new course record. Jason Green, 23, finished second in 14:53.5, also beating the previous record. Edmar G. Nateras, 19, rounded out the top three men in 16:45.43.

In the women’s division, Tara Wilson, 40, took first place in 20:20.16, followed by Alyson Hirschhorn, 30, in 20:32.6 and Alexandra Ehrhart, 27, in 21:10.96.

Running for a Cause

Beyond the competition, the Shelter Island Fall 5K carries a mission that has defined the event for 27 years: honoring those who have battled breast and other women’s cancers while raising funds to help patients across the East End.

Proceeds benefit the North Fork Breast Health Coalition, the Coalition for Women’s Cancers and Lucia’s Angels, three organizations providing support and assistance to women facing cancer.

Runners, walkers, volunteers and supporters gathered for the annual event, continuing a Shelter Island tradition that combines athletic competition with a cause close to home.
