Laura Linney Returns to Broadway in 2027 in David Hare’s ‘Montauk’ at Manhattan Theatre Club

Oscar nominee and Emmy winner named MTC’s first Artist-in-Residence ahead of world premiere set on the East End-inspired drama

Laura Linney will return to Broadway in spring 2027, starring in the world premiere of Montauk, a new play by David Hare at Manhattan Theatre Club’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre.

Directed by Daniel Sullivan, the play follows two artists whose personal and professional lives become deeply entangled as they confront questions of love, ambition, and the meaning of artistic creation. Linney will play Roxy Margaux, a writer drawn into a volatile relationship with a powerful visual artist described as a “stubborn titan of Long Island abstraction.” Additional casting will be announced.

‘Montauk’ will make its world premiere at The Manhattan Theater Club, NYC with Laura Linney in 2027.

The production also marks Linney’s appointment as Manhattan Theatre Club’s inaugural Artist-in-Residence, formalizing a decades-long relationship with the company. In this expanded role, she will collaborate with MTC on developing future projects and participate in its education and community engagement programs.

Linney’s association with MTC spans more than 30 years, beginning with Beggars in the House of Plenty (1991) and Sight Unseen (1992) Off-Broadway. She later appeared in several Broadway productions for the company, including Sight Unseen, Time Stands Still, The Little Foxes, My Name Is Lucy Barton, and Summer, 1976—multiple of which were directed by Sullivan.

“Laura Linney is one of the most versatile actors of our time,” MTC Artistic Director Nicki Hunter said in a statement. “Her artistry, intelligence, and generosity make her the ideal partner for this new initiative. We are thrilled to collaborate on David Hare’s Montauk and to welcome her in this expanded capacity.”

“I could not be more proud to be Manhattan Theatre Club’s first Artist-in-Residence,” Linney said. “MTC has been my theatrical home for decades, and I am deeply honored to begin this new chapter.”

Montauk joins MTC’s previously announced season, which includes School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play on Broadway and The Unbelievers Off-Broadway.
