Police say the child was caught in the current while retrieving footwear; the incident remains under investigation, according to reporting by 27 East/The Southampton Press.

A 6-year-old girl from Brooklyn died Saturday after she was swept away by a strong current at Sebonac Creek in Southampton, according to reporting by 27 East/The Southampton Press, citing Southampton Town Police.

Kiara Paolasin was visiting the beach with her family when the incident occurred shortly after 8 a.m. at a beach located at the end of Sebonac Inlet Road, police said.

According to a preliminary investigation, the child entered the water to retrieve footwear that had floated away but slipped and was pulled into the strong current in Sebonac Creek, which flows into Great Peconic Bay.

A 16-year-old family member attempted to rescue her but was unable to reach her because of the current, police said. The family then alerted a nearby kayaker, who paddled into the water and pulled Paolasin from Great Peconic Bay before bringing her back to shore.

When Southampton Town Police, volunteer ambulance personnel, firefighters and the Marine Patrol arrived, the kayaker was bringing the unresponsive child to shore, according to police.
