Cars, SUVs and Pickups Start at $500 at Suffolk Police Vehicle Auction in Westhampton
The Sept. 26 sale includes 80 vehicles, from a 2024 Toyota RAV4 and Dodge Challenger to BMWs, Mercedes, Jeeps, work trucks — and a 1970 Chevy Chevelle.

The Suffolk County Police Department is putting 80 vehicles up for sale in Westhampton on Saturday, Sept. 26, with everything from a 2024 Toyota RAV4 and 2019 Dodge Challenger to BMWs, Mercedes, pickups, SUVs — and even a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu.
Every vehicle starts at $500 — although where the bidding ends is another matter.
The Suffolk County Police Department Impound Section will hold the auction at its facility at 100 Old Country Road in Westhampton, with bidding beginning Saturday, Sept. 26 at 9 a.m. The auction will be held indoors, rain or shine.
What’s Up for Sale
Among the newer vehicles on the list are a 2024 Toyota RAV4, 2019 Dodge Challenger, 2020 Honda HR-V, 2018 GMC Sierra, 2018 Ford Taurus, 2018 Ford Explorer and 2017 Mercedes-Benz C300.
There are also two 2010 BMWs — a 328i and 535i — along with a 2007 Mercedes-Benz S550, 2008 Cadillac Escalade, Jeep Grand Cherokees, a Toyota 4Runner, Nissan Pathfinders, Honda Accords, Subarus and a substantial collection of pickups and work vehicles.
For those shopping with a little more nostalgia in mind, the list gets more interesting.
There’s a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu, along with a 1976 Chevrolet Silverado, 1982 Toyota Corolla and 1989 Ford Tempo
Preview the Cars Before You Bid
Potential buyers will have time for a little tire kicking before deciding whether to bid.
Vehicle previews and in-person registration will be held Thursday, Sept. 24, and Friday, Sept. 25, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A final one-hour preview will be held from 8 to 9 a.m. Saturday before bidding begins.
Registration is required to bid. Buyers must be at least 18 and present a valid government-issued ID. Those purchasing a vehicle under a business name must provide a valid New York state tax ID card.
How to Bid and Pay
All vehicles have a minimum bid of $500 and are sold as-is, with all sales final. The auction is cash only, although the department’s auction rules allow an exact certified bank check to complete full payment.
Winning bids of $2,000 or less must be paid in full immediately. For vehicles selling for more than $2,000, buyers must immediately pay a nonrefundable $2,000 deposit plus 25% of the remaining balance, with the rest due according to the department’s auction terms.
Vehicles are sold with an SCPD bill of sale rather than a title, and buyers are responsible for researching potential liens and VIN information. Some vehicles may have salvage certificates or require a New York State Department of Motor Vehicles inspection before they can be registered and titled.
Buyers are also responsible for towing their purchases from the impound facility — so even if you land that Chevelle, don’t count on simply turning the key and cruising out of Westhampton.
Where Do the Cars Come From?
This isn’t simply a sale of old county fleet vehicles.
The September auction list includes vehicles from three sources: the Suffolk County Police Department, Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office and Suffolk County Public Administrator.
Some police impound vehicles are seized under county law. Suffolk County requires vehicle seizure in certain cases, including repeat DWI or unlicensed-driving offenses, reckless driving with a prior conviction, speed contests and unlawfully fleeing police. Forfeited vehicles may ultimately be sold at public auction.
Other vehicles can come through the Public Administrator, which handles estates when, for example, an executor or close relative cannot act or relatives cannot be located. The office takes possession of and secures personal property belonging to those estates, which can include vehicles.
