Contained Movement Brings Monumental Outdoor Sculpture to Southampton Arts Center
New exhibition transforms the newly renovated Paulson Family Gardens with works by Kiki Smith, Richard Hudson, Rachel Lee Hovnanian and more, opening July 25.
The Southampton Arts Center is unveiling a striking new outdoor sculpture exhibition this summer with Contained Movement, opening July 25 in the newly renovated Paulson Family Gardens.
Curated by Leila Heller Gallery, Simone Levinson, Christine Mack and Christina M. Strassfield, the exhibition features contemporary sculptures on loan from Leila Heller Gallery and Room 57 Gallery.
The collection explores the relationship between stillness and motion through works by internationally recognized artists, including Kiki Smith, Richard Hudson, John Clement, Mia Fonssagrives Solow, Rachel Lee Hovnanian, Katya Emelyanova, Anton Bakker, Arthur Carter and Leo Orta.
Working in materials ranging from mirrored steel and painted aluminum to bronze, ceramic and fiberglass, the artists examine movement, transformation and quiet energy, inviting visitors to experience sculpture in an immersive garden setting.
“It was so exciting to explore our new garden and find the perfect placements for these truly amazing works of art,” said Christina M. Strassfield, executive director of Southampton Arts Center. “They fit beautifully within nature and enhance the landscape around them.”
The opening reception takes place Friday, July 25, from 5 to 7 p.m. and coincides with the exhibition Presence: The Photography Collection of Judy Glickman Lauder.
Admission is free and open to the public.
